Principal Climate Change


BHP’s strategy is tied to economic growth in both emerging and developed economies and sustainable development requires an effective response to climate change. As a result, responding to climate change is a priority Board governance and strategic issue for our Company, with our activities focused on mitigation, adaptation, low emissions technology and portfolio analysis. Our strategy is underpinned by active engagement with our stakeholders, including investors, policy makers, peer companies and non-government organisations.


The Principal Climate Change is responsible for providing functional expertise and strategic insights into climate change risk management. Your aim will be to identify emerging trends and provide governance over cross-country strategies to address material climate issues.


Your Role:


  • Critically review, and provide data to support, investor requests, benchmarks and engagements on climate and sustainability issues.
  • Identify opportunities to improve and streamline risk reporting and disclosure based on understanding of changing societal expectations, regulations and emerging trends.
  • Lead engagement with international climate change and climate risk reporting bodies and standard setters, including ICMM, CDP and GRI.
  • Support Vice President, Sustainability and Climate Change with investor engagement on climate-related disclosures.
  • Manage external publications of BHP’s climate change work.
  • Lead the climate change dimension of the Company’s Scenario and Portfolio Analysis in conjunction with other teams in BHP.
  • Lead BHP’s global response and advocacy in relation to emerging climate change policy.
  • Manage development of BHP’s public targets on climate change including working collaboratively across regions and with other BHP teams.
  • Works with others in BHP to progress the development of low emissions technology to address emissions both in our operations as well as in our supply chain.
  • Mentors others to identify opportunities for improvement in reporting and disclosure of community and social investment information and build functional capability.


Your Expertise:


We are looking to appoint a strong strategic thinker, who has the ability to build and maintain relationships internally and externally. Along with the ability to challenge and influence the status quo, you will have existing experience in climate change preferably within a large multinational organisation. #LIGF
